Australian mineral sands producer Iluka has awarded the contract to complete front end engineering design and undertake engineering, procurement and construction management services for the $A1-1.2B rare earths refinery at its Eneabba project in WA to Fluor Australia.
Construction of the refinery, key to Iluka’s rare earths diversification plans, is fully funded under a risk-sharing arrangement between the company and the Australian government.
Construction is due to begin this year, with first production scheduled in 2025.

The project losses knocked Fluor’s overall backlog down to $40.8B billion at the end of the 3rd qtr from $43B 3 months before.
The loss of $2B worth of projects has cut Fluor’s 2013 earnings estimates as the tough times continue.
