Two neighbouring gold mines in the western region of Ghana will be melded into Africa’s largest and one of the world’s biggest under a proposed JV between international majors Gold Fields and AngloGold Ashanti.
The two companies have agreed key terms in principle to link Gold Fields’ 90%-owned Tarkwa mine and AngloGold’s 100%-owned Iduapriem mine.
Their incorporated JV will be operated by Gold Fields, which will hold 66.7% to the 33.3% held by AngloGold. The Ghana government will retain a 10% stake in Tarkwa.
Gold Fields interim CEO Martin Preece says the companies have had many discussions over recent years on combining the mining operations over what are essentially part of the same mineral deposit.
