Australian-based explorer Ioneer has been offered a $US700M, 10-year loan by the US Department of Energy to back development of its planned long-life lithium and boron mining project at Rhyolite Ridge between Reno and Las Vegas in Nevada.
MD Bernard Rowe says the conditional commitment, which follows nearly two years of detailed technical, legal and market due diligence, is a significant milestone for the proposed development of North America’s only known lithium-boron deposit.

Iconic automaker Ford has positioned itself to become a foundation customer for Rio Tinto’s Rincon lithium brine project in Argentina as it pushes for secure, sustainable supply chains for battery and low-carbon materials to be used in electric vehicles.
US auto giant Ford has secured a domestic lithium supply for its electric vehicle supply chain through a binding offtake agreement with developer ioneer at its 100%-owned Rhyolite Ridge project in S Nevada.
The five-year agreement for 7,000tpa lithium carbonate represents about 34% of the lithium-boron operation’s forecast initial production. It commences on project commissioning, expected to be in H2 2025.
The global leader in proprietary lithium-sulphur battery technology, NexTech Batteries, has completed an MoU with emerging lithium-boron supplier ioneer for the supply of lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide from the Rhyolite Ridge project, its 50-50 JV with Sibanye in Nevada, USA.
The Rhyolite Ridge product will be used at NexTech’s Carson City production facility to manufacture solid-state batteries for sectors including the automotive industry, renewable energy and grid storage applications.
Emerging lithium-boron producer ioneer has named global technology leader ABB to supply systems engineering and optimisation for the equipment packages at the $US785M Rhyolite Ridge project in Nevada, USA.
ioneer says the contract, which is conditional on a final investment decision, includes a steam turbine generator, medium and low voltage electrical distribution, power management and plant-wide process automation and instrumentation systems for the project's generation, acid and lithium processing plants.
South African major Sibanye Stillwater has put its considerable weight behind the development of the Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron project in Nevada, USA, agreeing to pay $US490M for a 50% JV share with Ioneer and take a $70M placement in the Australian-based company.
Sibanye has also taken an option to acquire 50% interest in Ioneer’s adjoining early stage North Basin exploration project.
Ioneer has completed its fully underwritten institutional placement after lifting it from $A60M to $80M to accelerate construction of its $US785M, 100%-owned Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada, US.
Australia-based Ioneer has launched a $A60M $0.38cps fully underwritten placement to accelerating construction of its $US785M, 100%-owned Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada, US.
Proceeds will be used to advance detailed engineering (~60%) and vendor engineering to construction ready status; fund environmental, research and consulting expenses; and for discretionary substantive pre-construction activities.
The proposed $US785M Rhyolite Ridge lithium-boron development project in Nevada is set to become North America’s first greenfield operation to utilise autonomous haulage systems under a MoU between the project’s 100% owner ioneer and equipment giant Caterpillar.
